When was the last time you received a bouquet of flowers? How did it make you feel? Did you smile? Laugh? Maybe even cry with joy? Now imagine if you were in a hospital or healthcare facility, alone, without anything to brighten your day.
This is the scenario under which Random Acts of Flowers was formed. The idea for Random Acts of Flowers was inspired by Larsen Jay,who had a terrible accident that resulted in a long-term hospital stay. The amount of support, well-wishes and flowers sent to him was overwhelming. One day, while being rolled in a wheelchair through the hospital halls by his mother, Larsen noticed many rooms without visitors, flowers, or other expressions of kindness – the very gifts that significantly aided in his recovery. Larsen decided to gather up his bouquets and plants and share them with complete strangers. The delivery of these flowers became a life-changing experience as moments of despair turned to exhilarating happiness, an atmosphere of sorrow transformed into a smile, and people under extreme duress forgot everything, even for just a moment. What a simple gesture; to make someone smile and relieve a moment of pain.
How wonderful it feels to help others, and now there is an organization devoted to spreading the joy of giving, just as Larsen experienced during his hospital stay. Working with local florists and supported by generous patrons and volunteers, Random Acts of Flowers will deliver a little happiness to patients in partner healthcare facilities. Each week, volunteers will arrive at a hospital or nursing home and randomly deliver bouquets of flowers and small plants to rooms that could use a little cheer. Random Acts of Flowers is about taking care of those around us. Getting involved is easy: people can give their time to make deliveries or make a financial contribution. The concept is simple: flowers and plants are delivered to someone needing comfort. Those of us lucky enough to have a support system know the difference when someone is thinking of you.
